Local Networks: Toward a Decolonial Map of Pullman

Mapping Social Networks

A first attempt at a project which could map lived experiences, the social network mapping layers below illustrate some of the limitations of working with digital tools.

The original concept being a map which could show how people from different communities were experiencing the space in real time was met with a few challenges in execution. The constraint of working with a limited Twitter API through the Public Information layer of ArcGIS led to very few tweets being mapped from within the last 24 hours, and did not allow for tweets to be filtered in any way. What remains, even though Instagram posts were also made available, is a map which often consists of more advertising tweets and tweets from Greek life than any other. Through the process of making and using this map, it became clear that although it is able to map the space differently than, say,  Google Maps does, it does not reach the goal of envisioning the land according to lived experience. For these reasons, another kind of map--one which actively incorporated a community--was necessary.

Use the menu to log into your social media accounts, and the map will auto-populate with geotagged results from within the last 24 hours.
