Gender Pay Gap in Sports

Grand Slam Tournaments

The grand slam tournaments include the Wimbledon, French Open, Australian Open, and US Open (Bodo). Currently, all of the grand slam tournaments support equal pay between the genders. For the US Open, the first time that they offered equal prize money was in 1973 with an individual prize of $25,000 (Bodo). The gender gap can be especially evident though, such as the case of the 1978 Australian open which paid women $22.2K and men a whopping $151.5K (583.3% more than the women were paid). In 2001, the Australian open converted to an equal pay scale for both genders and in 2006 the French Open followed suit (Bodo).
