Gender Pay Gap in Sports

Proportionality Within the Association

The US Women’s National Soccer Team and the US Men’s National Soccer Team both belong to the United States Soccer Federation, but like many other national sports, the women’s team was established much further down the line (Women's Soccer History in the USA: An Overview). When looking into the pay proportionality between the US Men’s and Women’s team, it is important to consider the amount of time each team has had to build up a following.

Along with a sizeable following, the men’s team would initially be preferred to be broadcasted by sports networks simply because it’s more popular. This would slow the growth of the USWNT by a substantial amount. Luckily, the women’s team did extremely well ever since their first world cup win in 1991, and fans like watching teams win (Women's Soccer History in the USA: An Overview).

But has this led to proportional compensation for the women’s and men’s teams in the USSF? This question is still ongoing and that is due to the popularity gained by the US Women’s National Soccer Team.
