Old Mission Days
In 1953 I went to my first school at old Phillip Creek Mission. I went to school at Phillip Creek Mission with other kids, some still alive. Teachers were sometimes bit rough. We weren't allowed to talk language in school. We were not allowed to play with girls. At recess time, boys and girls were separate. But at that time teachers didn't allow it. Boys would go hunting. Teachers would take us hunting and some old fellas would go too. We would hunt for goanna. We used to get goannas, blue-tounges, palyu-palyu, we call them. We used to go wash ourselves in the creek. There where no shower blocks only pit toilet. We used to go to the creek, girls first and then the boys would go. All the boys where separated from the girls.
Phillip Creek station, just west of the old mission, that's were old people worked. My Dad did stock work there and my Mum worked cleaning up, washing dishes and sweeping up floors. I lived with other family members my Aunty and Plummer's family. Graham, my big brother who pass away, he used to take care for me. My Mum and Dad where working at Phillip Creek Station. Old lady passed away now, L.G.'s Grandma, she grew me up, she used to wash me and feed me, at Phillip Creek and Warrabri too, she took care of lots of kids that wulkuman. She was like my mother. It was very hard in those day we had no time to visit our families.
