Working at Seven Mile
Aboriginal blokes used to be working here. We like the job though, like drilling bores and that. They get a contract to do it, to build the bore. First put the ground casing down and they test the water, what the water test like, after that they tell the manger if the water is good or not. If it's good it can be used.
Usually there might be three Aboriginal blokes. We had one on the truck and you got two blokes working on the ground, one bloke to undo the ropes for the casing and other fellow to take it outside and lay them out. If you were just pulling rods to put in your bucket then maybe, this might only be about a couple hours work. But for pulling casing and rods out, that's two days work. We worked two full days.
In 60s and 70s, we used to get monthly pay at maybe hundred dollars a month. That's all we used to get. We used to get food and clothes for nothing. Whitefellas used to get paid more than Wumpurrarni people in those days. Nowadays everyone should get paid equally.
