Washington State University was founded in 1890 as a land-grant college called the Agricultural College, Experiment Station and School of Science of the State of Washington. On March 2, 1905, the state legislature approved a name change to State College of Washington, or was commonly called Washington State College. On July 1, 1959, Washington State College was changed to Washington State University.
