The sign was built in 1955, and in 1959, the sign would be changed from State College of Washington to Washington State University. This sign was in turn removed and replaced in the late 2010s. The small plaque on the right explains the sign's origins: "The stone incorporated herein is from the original campus entrance arch, gift of the Class of 1905. The arch was located at the junction of Oak street and Administration Walk until 1955 when, with the approval of the Class of 1905, it was removed to permit the widening of Oak street."
