The brick structure visible in the background through the pine trees is one of the oldest campus reservoirs. Built during the earliest days of WSU, the reservoir was no longer in use by the 1930s. It was razed during the construction of the CUB. Designed by John Maloney in modern functional style, the Compton Union Building (CUB) was built in 1951 at a cost of $3 million and named for Wilson Compton, WSU President 1944 to 1951. The CUB was financed by the Regents through bond issues totaling $2,613,000, with the remaining funds contributed by the Associated Students (ASSCW). In 1969, a major renovation added an additional floor to the building including hotel rooms.

Washington State College (later Washington State University) students gather outside the Compton Union Building (CUB) in preparation for the Losers' Walk to the University of Idaho campus. Signs present read "Idaho have Fun; We won't walk 'til 81" (presumably this involved some bad math and refers to WSC last having lost 29 years earlier, though the correct math would put 29 years later at '83), and "If Jones goes, so goes Alpha Tau Delta," which refers to ASWSU President Barry Jones. Traditionally the Losers Walk bet only involved members of the two schools student government and student newspapers, but others almost always accompanied them. In 1954, reports vary in saying from 1000 to 2000 Cougars walked.
Students rally in front of the Compton Union Building (CUB) on the campus of Washington State University in support of Ralph Atkins. In March of 1970, nearly 3,000 students marched through Pullman to protest the draft, racism, and were boycotting non-union grapes to show support for migrant workers. Several demonstrators entered Pullman supermarkets and began smashing grapes. However, only Ralph Atkins, a black sophomore who was dressed in a Black Panther uniform, was arrested; he was charged with inciting a riot.
