From Wharton to McClure's to Appleton to Macmillan: Journey of "Summer" from Manuscript to Print

Comparative Chart by Category: Ellipsis

The First British Edition of Summer differs from the First American Edition of Summer in terms of the style of Ellipsis. According to Blackall, for ellipsis, “Wharton’s preference was for three spaced dots” (160). Wharton used three spaced dots for terminal ellipsis in the MS of Summer. Even though both of these editions retained Wharton’s preferred three spaced dots for ellipsis, the First American Edition of Summer uses four dots for terminal ellipsis that include un unspaced period and three spaced dots for ellipsis. McLure’s Magazine edition of Summer does the same.
However, the First British Edition of Summer uses three spaced dots for all ellipses––the ones that occur within the sentence and the ones that occur at the end of the sentence, except only one instance where the FBE uses four dots similar to the FAE (see the chart below). It is not sure if it was a printing mistake or intentional since this is the only instance where it happens. From the rest of the examples of ellipsis in the FBE, we can assume that this difference is either a result of the difference between the writing conventions in American and British publishing industries or of Macmillan's adherence to the MSS. Similar difference in the style of ellipsis is noticeable in the First American Edition of Wharton’s House of Mirth by Scriber’s and the First British Edition of Wharton’s House of Mirth by Macmillan.
